Teeth whitening
We’ve all become used to seeing photos of celebrities and models with perfectly white teeth, and the hue of our own teeth can look dull in comparison.
A professional cleaning by one of our hygienists will not only make your teeth look cleaner, they’ll be healthier too once they’re free of damaging plaque. But if you’d like to take further steps to counteract the long term effects of staining foods and drinks, we offer several options, both in-office and take home.
Our in-office process creates a dramatic change right away, while our take-home process provides more gradual results that go beyond the remedies you find on the Internet. Internet kits can be unsafe, especially if you haven’t had a dentist confirm if the whitener is safe for your unique dental and gum conditions.
For our take-home teeth whitening process, we provide you with proven bleaching gels that you use in custom-made trays, perfectly fitted to your teeth. You simply use the gel nightly according to our instructions until you’ve reached your desired shade of whiteness.
Your new whiter, brighter teeth will last for months before needing a maintenance treatment, although no teeth whitening process is permanent. How long your new shade lasts will depend on what you eat and drink and your dental hygiene habits.
Comprehensive smile design
Smile design is a process of evaluating your smile aesthetics and creating a custom treatment plan to achieve your best possible smile.
It goes beyond correcting one or two issues, and factors in everything to do with your smile, from colour to alignments and proportions with your overall facial structure. Some of the elements we consider include:
- Colour changes to whiten and brighten the teeth.
- Straightening the teeth with Invisalign or other systems.
- Aligning the teeth to the centre of the face.
- Creating better tooth proportions (improving length-to-width ratios).
- Adjusting the amount of tooth displayed during the smile.
- Adjusting the amount of gum displayed.
- Aligning the teeth for a better fit when biting.
Based on your expectations, we develop a plan we act on over the course of weeks, months, or even years, depending on the amount of work needed.

Fixing gaps between teeth
Few things can make people feel more self-conscious than gaps between their teeth.
For patients with small to medium gaps, we can use a BPA free white filling material (composite), accompanied by a system called BioClear to fill in any spaces between the teeth. It’s virtually painless, and looks completely natural because it’s shaded to match the colour of your teeth.
BioClear can also be used to fix small chips in the teeth, or tiny triangular gaps that appear along the gum line as we age. If your teeth and gums are healthy, BioClear may be a great option for you. We also use BioClear as one option for veneers.
Dental veneers
Dental veneers are a custom-made thin, hard layer of material bonded to the front of your teeth. They can be used to cover undesirable features like chips, stains, or smaller than average teeth. At Oceana, we offer both porcelain and composite veneers, and each has its advantages.
Nothing matches the natural shine and translucency of porcelain dental veneers. They’re also more durable, lasting about 15-25 years, and highly resistant to stains. They are, however, also more expensive, and may require some enamel removal from your teeth to make room for the veneers.
We also offer composite veneers using BioClear. BioClear is non-invasive, reversible, can often be done in one visit, and is a more cost-effective alternative to porcelain veneers. While they don’t last as long, they can be more easily reapplied after their 10 to 15-year life span.
Fixing white spots on teeth
White spots can be caused by accidents, antibiotics or sickness at a young age, antibiotics or sickness in pregnant mothers, too many sugary or acidic foods in your diet, or by too much fluoride (there are other potential causes as well). If you or your child has white spots, it’s important to get an assessment by a dentist to ensure that the root cause is corrected.
Once the underlying condition has been dealt with, we can remove the white spots for you. For many types of white spots, we can use ICON resin infiltration. It’s painless, natural-looking, quick to complete, and the results last for many years.
ICON resin infiltration uses a mild chemical abrasive to remove a thin layer of the enamel. The process is then halted, and the resin is applied to the surface of the tooth and allowed to absorb for a few minutes. With some severe white spots, we may need to repeat the process multiple times.
